The Meaning Behind Our Certifications — And why they matter
For over 40 years, we’ve believed what we eat matters. Honest food is rooted in intentional decisions and accountability. In an industry ripe with greenwashing, we strive to hold ourselves to a higher standard. For us, certifications aren't just marketing labels on a package—they are the anchors that keep us baking for people & planet.
We support good-for-the-earth farming practices, reduce our carbon footprint through solar power and electrification, and use offsets to offer you the only carbon-neutral bread in the United States. For good measure, we donate 1% of sales to environmental non-profits, and, in 2022, built a fully electrified, fossil-fuel-free bakery in the Catskills!
As we celebrate Earth Month, we’re taking a moment to share the "why" behind the seals you see on our products. It isn’t the fast or easy path, but these standards ensure we’re doing things the right way—not just for the moment, but for the next 40 years.
Here is a closer look at the certifications we carry and why they matter to our food, our farmers, and our community.
USDA ORGANIC
No synthetic pesticides. No prohibited inputs. Better for people, workers health, and the planet. Made with regionally sourced organic wheat, many of our bakery and grocery breads meet USDA Organic standards & are crafted at our Certified Organic Production Bakery in Kingston, NY. We’ve proudly been one of the longest-certified Organic companies in the U.S..
1% For The Planet
Founded by our friends at Patagonia, 1% for the Planet is a movement of organizations committed to environmental impact. We donate 1% of our bread sales each year to environmental nonprofits, as one of many initiatives to lessen our load on planet earth. We’re proud to be part of a global network tackling the planet’s most pressing issues since 2018.
Baked By The Sun
Our carbon-neutral Boiceville bakery uses our fully electric Heuft ovens, which get their power from our 366kW on-site solar array, bringing us closer to our goal of 100% renewable energy by 2030.
The Climate Label Certified
We measure our carbon footprint, work each year to reduce it through initiatives like increasing our solar power and electrification, and offset the rest of our footprint each year. We have been proudly certified since 2020!
We know that earning your trust is an ongoing process. While we are proud of the certifications we hold and the standards they represent, our commitment doesn't end there. We are always seeking new ways to innovate, reduce our environmental impact, and support a more just and regenerative food system. When you choose our bread, you are choosing a product rooted in transparency, accountability, and a deep respect for the Earth. Thank you for joining us on this journey toward honest food for a better future.
