BPI Certified: Compostable Packaging

We’re thrilled to launch our first BPI Certified Commercially Compostable packaging exclusively with FreshDirect for our San Francisco Sourdough, available now through their site! We thank Fresh Direct for their partnership bringing this initiative to life.

OUR COMPOSTABLE PACKAGING STORY

With our goal of lightening our load on planet earth, single-use plastic packaging is a challenging area we’re committed to improving. We aren’t going to sugarcoat it – moving beyond single-use plastic packaging is a real problem that needs to be addressed, and we’ve been working for years to come up with a solution.

Our goal is to move all our packaging to compostable material. This will take time as composting infrastructure becomes readily available to all. We hope that our nudge helps create momentum across the bread industry and beyond, and ultimately helps us all tread a bit more lightly on planet earth.
— Nels Leader, CEO of Bread Alone

These efforts have led us to a plant-based, BPI Certified Commercially Compostable bag that we’re introducing with FreshDirect, as their NYC customers have widespread access to commercial composting facilities. Derived from biodegradable crops such as sugar cane, when properly composted, our bag becomes a nutrient-rich fertilizer that helps build soil health. We chose to work with BPI because they rigorously test all certified materials, ensuring they meet the criteria to break down into compost.

This is just the beginning of our journey to lessen the impact of our single-use plastic packaging, and we commit to introducing additional sustainable options over time and to progress over perfection. Thank you for your partnership in lessening our load on planet earth.
