Earth Day 2020

Today is Earth Day.

The 50th anniversary.

It is a day when our vision and hope for the future must win over our fear and uncertainty for the present.

During the COVID-19 crisis we have seen the power of businesses' voluntary actions to assuage shortages and meet new demands. We’ve seen the collective power of individuals to make choices that protect all of us. It is these types of actions that will address climate change. Healing our environment is a journey. We all have a responsibility to commit to the process, while also tending to the needs of the present.

To that end we are thrilled to announce three actions we’ve taken to protect our planet.

We’re officially a Climate Neutral Certified company!

In partnership with @ClimateNeutral, we measured our 2019 carbon emissions from producing and delivering our breads. We purchased carbon credits to offset our footprint. We created and are implementing strategies to reduce our emissions this year and beyond.

Simply put, we believe that Certified Climate Neutral will give customers the information needed to make the right decision for the planet, and for our collective future. We hope that other businesses will join us and that customers will buy climate neutral by looking for the Climate Neutral Certified label.

Our Boiceville location will be a climate neutral facility.

We’re thrilled to announce our plan to renovate our original Boiceville location into a climate neutral facility that leverages geothermal energy for heating and cooling and on-site solar.

We are in the design phase of the project. Though we’ve been forced to refocus our efforts over the past 8 weeks, this project is the future of our business and coronavirus be damned we are going to make it happen.

You’ll be hearing more over the coming months.

Our transition to compostable packaging for our breads is moving forward. We will be releasing our first compostable bread bag this summer.

Though our carbon footprint is the most pressing issue that we must address for our planet, our daily use of thousands of single use plastic bags is unacceptable.

Changes like these are part of the journey.

Care for the planet has been integral to Bread Alone since the beginning, and we continue to deepen that commitment. Thank you to our customers for supporting this commitment, and to so many of our business friends and peers that inspire and support us.

In another 50 years let us look back on this day and know that we rose to the impossibly high bar of the moment and continued the essential work for our planet, too.
