SOLAR POWER ON THE ROOF OF HQ

From our humble beginnings along Route 28 in the Catskills, we have always maintained a deep commitment to people and planet alike. In 1983, this meant baking with organic grains, and creating healthful, deeply nourishing breads for our customers.

Now in our 35th year we’re renewing our commitment to the planet with our 196KW solar array on the roof of our Kingston HQ.

This project reflects the values that have sustained Bread Alone from the beginning, and also marks our continued dedication to our communities and natural resources!

That’s over 11,500 square feet or ¼ acre of solar panels.

This is enough energy to power 25 American homes.

Thirty percent is only the beginning. We're on our way to 100% renewable energy by 2030.

WASTE REDIRECTED

We’re proud to partner with Toast Ale USA to help minimize our waste stream from the bakery. A certified B Corp, Toast reclaims surplus bread and turns it into delicious beer. As fermentation lovers we couldn’t think of a better use of our day-old sourdoughs than a crisp IPA. To date, Toast has saved roughly 2200 pounds of bread in 5100 gallons of beer.

Additionally, we compost food waste both within the bakery and in the cafes, and donate leftover bread to soup kitchens, farmers, and to organizations such as City Harvest.

1% FOR THE PLANET

Starting in Spring 2018, we are extraordinarily proud to announce our membership with 1% For The Planet, a global movement that inspires businesses and individuals to tackle the ecologic challenges confronting our planet. With our membership, we commit to contributing 1% of revenue to support environmental solutions.

All Together for Our Planet!

100% COMMITTED

Bread Alone has signed-on to the 100% Committed Campaign created by the Climate Reality Project. With this commitment, we have pledged to source 100% of our energy from renewable sources no later than 2030.

With our 196k solar array, we are already well on the path to meeting this goal well in advance of 2030. We have begun planning the next phase of our renewable transition, and anticipate adding additional photo-voltaic energy capacity to the business in 2018-2019.

EFFICIENT DELIVERIES

We deliver our breads every day using internal combustion engine trucks. There is no avoiding this simple fact! But we can choose to do so with as light a foot-print as possible. And that's what we do with our fleet of efficient 4 cylinder diesel Mercedes sprinter trucks.

We are closely monitoring the development of electric delivery trucks, and hope to be an early adopter for these technologies as they become viable.

OVENS: ENGINEERED TO CONSERVE HEAT ENERGY

We bake our breads using a thermo-oil oven system from Heuft GMBH, in our opinion the best builder of artisan bread ovens around the world. These ovens are engineered for efficiency, and use a single natural gas burner to bake thousands of breads each hour, while our solar array provides the energy for the pumps and motors that circulate heat around the ovens.
